Description
In 2018 I was diagnosed with low-grade (slow-spreading), B-cell non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. We had just moved to the desert the year before which meant I didn’t have a support network set up in any way to help me through. So, when I started treatment, my mum came down to help us out. And, oh my gosh, was she a help! (Her cooking is life-giving, y’all.)
Our living space here is pretty tiny, though, and my mum, like me, needs her alone time. She decided to grab that time by weeding our yard. As I was watching her one day, it occurred to me that her weeding was a perfect metaphor for the entire experience. Rooting out the invading cells/plants, leaving a healthy base upon which to build.
(TBH, I also thought she made a striking figure in that hot pink shirt and my purple hat, kneeling with the shovel in hand.)
11″ x 14″ acrylic on canvas. Varnished.
