My parents live five minutes away from many beaches in the Pacific Northwest. They also live more than a thousand miles away from landlocked me. So, whenever I get the chance to visit them, I always insist we see at least one sunset over one of the beaches. I remember working rather hard to get this shot, as the moon rose over the mountains. The driftwood made a perfect frame for the scene. Alas, my camera was not the best, and the resulting photograph was too grainy to use as anything but inspiration for a painting.
Happily, I finally got around to using the shot, and this was the result! I had fun using the palette knife to apply the thick, buttery paint all around. I think there are only about 5 brushstrokes in this piece – detailing little places the palette knife would have been too clumsy for.
